One woman was among the dead after they picked through a pile of stored potatoes in the Siberian city. The owner let the group work with the potatoes but when he came back to check a few hours later, they were all dead.
'There was a strong smell of spoiled tubers, which gives grounds to believe that the deaths were caused by a toxicsubstance released by rotting potatoes' said a statement by Russia's Investigative Committee, equivalent of the FBI.
If confirmed, it would be the second time within a year that four people have died from the lethal fumes of potatoes. In August last year a family of four was killed in Tatarstan from the noxious gases of potatoes. Maria Chelysheva lost her father, mother, brother and grandmother who were killed one by one after entering a cellar where they stored potatoes for winter.
