£80m LOSS £60m FINE! QPR face record-breaking punishment!

Queens Park Rangers are on course to be hit with the biggest fine in British football history, which, in a worse-case scenario, could top £60 million.
Ironically, it will be imposed because of the amount of money they are losing — believed to be a huge £80m for last season — and will compound their financial troubles, perhaps sparking meltdown.

They have racked up big debts and massive annual losses largely through signing dozens of players on huge contracts in recent seasons, including Chris Samba, Park Ji-Sung, Julio Cesar, Jermaine Jenas, Loic Remy and others, most of whom remain on the club’s books, draining their resources with contracts worth up to £100,000 a week.

If QPR are promoted this season, the fine will be levied in January 2015 by the Football League under their new Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, which will see overspending clubs ‘taxed’ on their losses. Rangers are currently favourites to go up to the Premier League from the Championship this season. They could avoid a fine — or at least postpone it — if they fail to get promoted. In that case, they will be hit with a lengthy transfer embargo.
The mathematics are complicated, but in broad terms, Championship clubs will pay a £1 fine for every £1 they lose over £18m in the 2013-14 financial year.
Short stay: Chris Samba Spent six months at QPR to July 2013 on £100,000 a week. His 10 Premier League games cost £2.5m in wages

Sources familiar with QPR’s financial situation have told The Mail on Sunday that the club will post losses for 2012-13 of about £80m. The club are not obliged to publish those accounts until next spring and have declined to comment.

Rangers are two-thirds owned by Malaysian businessman Tony  Fernandes and one-third by the  Mittal family. Fernandes’s majority shareholding gives him ultimate power and it is he who sanctioned the hiring of Mark Hughes and then Harry Redknapp, allowing both to sign large groups of players.
It is expected that the club will record another massive deficit for the current season, and it is the losses in 2013-14 that will be measured to calculate any fine.

If QPR’s losses for the season are £80m, the fine will be about £62m. That would equate to roughly all of QPR’s Premier League income (if they are promoted) for next season. Even if 2013-14 losses are as ‘low’ as £60m, a fine of more than £40m would follow.

‘This is the first season in which clubs will ultimately face sanctions [for over-spending],’ a Football League spokesman told The Mail on Sunday. ‘Clubs have to submit their accounts for 2013-14 to us by December 1, 2014, with sanctions levied early in 2015. If a club being sanctioned are in the Premier League by then, the fine will need to be paid.’

QPR’s accounts for 2012-13, in which they were relegated from the Premier League, have not been made public, nor will the club confirm when they will be. Asked to comment on their expected losses last season and this season, and on the potentially destructive fines, a Loftus Road spokesman said: ‘The club will be making no comment on [these] matters at this time.’

The Mail on Sunday can reveal that the Football League plan to donate fines levied under their FFP rules to charity. It had previously been expected that fines paid by overspending clubs would be shared among clubs who stayed within the rules and did not lose huge amounts while trying to ‘buy’ success. But a senior FL source says giving the fines to charity is now the preferred option ‘for a number of political reasons’.

The last publicly available accounts for QPR relate to the 2011-12 season, when they made a loss of £22.6m, had debts of £89m and a wage bill that had almost doubled year-on-year from £29.7m to £58.4m.

Park Ji-Sung moved from Manchester United in July 2012 for £2m. Now on loan at PSV with QPR paying most of his £70,000-a-week wage
Park Ji-Sung moved from Manchester United in July 2012 for £2m. Now on loan at PSV with QPR paying most of his £70,000-a-week wage

That huge wage bill was before they signed high-earning players like Samba, Park, Rob Green, Junior Hoilett, Ryan Nelsen, Jose Bosingwa, Julio Cesar, Stephane Mbia, Remy and Jenas.

The wage bill for QPR’s relegation season is expected to be about £90m, or, by itself, about 150 per cent of the club’s total income of about £65m. A ‘sensible’ wage ratio is closer to 50 per cent of turnover. They have cut some costs since last season, releasing or selling 11 players in the summer including Samba, Bosingwa and Anton Ferdinand.
But they also signed eight new players on permanent deals and loaned three others including Benoit Assou-Ekotto from Tottenham and Niko Kranjcar from Dynamo Kiev.
QPR’s income will also have plunged between last season in the Premier League and this season in the Championship, largely through reduction in TV money.

School principal leaves $1 million to Indon maid

A maid from Indonesia who worked in Singapore for a former primary school principal for over 13 years has become a millionaire overnight thanks to being included in her former employer's will.
Madam Khoo Guat Neo, who died aged 92, had left about a third of her estate to her maid which was worth about $1 million.
It is understood that Mdm Khoo was single and had lived alone with her maid for several years in a landed property near Upper Thomson Road.
The maid had returned to Indonesia upon her employer's death but returned last month to collect the money.
There is clearly a mix of attitudes to maids in Singapore.
In some families, maids run away due to being abused and mistreated while in other families they are treated as if they are part of the family and work for many years.
In this case, it is clear that the maid was seen as part of the family and must have worked closely with her employer and formed a close bond.
The incident has been quite well received by Singaporeans with many commenting that it is a good example and that people should learn from it to treat their maids better too.
Many comments online have said that it is heartwarming and a reminder that maids are human too and deserve to be treated with respect.
On the other hand, a small number of people commented that maids may want to capitalize on such cases in future and deliberately look for single, old and rich employers for a chance to "strike it rich".
Do you think maids should be treated as a part of the family?

Batman jailed for stealing!

So, how on earth is he going to get himself out of this situation?
A 23-year-old unemployed man with a superhero name has been jailed for nearly three years for theft, trespassing and drug use.

Batman bin Suparman was caught on CCTV breaking into a snooker hall at the Depot Heights Shopping Centre in Singapore on two separate occasions and stealing S$500 (£250) in total.

He pleaded guilty to various charges, including stealing his brother’s bank card to make withdrawals totalling S$650 (£325), and taking heroin. Batman was sent to prison for a total of 33 months.

Batman - who was arrested on August 19 and jailed yesterday - became a social media sensation when an image of his oddly-named identity card, listing a date of birth of May 13, 1990, went viral.
News of the theft - which took place at a snooker hall called Games Fusion Billards at the mall on Depot Road - was first reported by the likes of Agence France-Presse and Channel News Asia

A Facebook fan page called ‘Batman bin Suparman Fan Club’ has gathered more than 11,000 likes. One post by a user suggested he 'legally changed his name to be a misspelled DC character hybrid'.

Other users on the website said he could use his time in jail to 'catch up on all your comic book reading', while another said: 'He's only in jail for training, like at the beginning of Batman Begins'.

And Kevin Yang said: 'Our idol has been jailed! Someone break him out of prison!'

An article on Slate claimed the surname 'Suparman' is actually common among part of the Javanese population, and comes from the prefix of 'Su-', derived from a root meaning 'good and fortunate'.
'Our idol has been jailed! Someone break him out of prison!'

The writer added that the surname is often seen in parts of Asia, with a former Indonesian military commander named Djadja Suparman and a Sundanese musician called Ade Suparman.
Batman, however, is not a common name - and the author hints that the man's name, which literally translates as 'Batman, son of Suparman', could even have been a 'wry joke' by his parents.
Reports claimed Batman pleaded guilty to several offences within the charges of six counts of theft, two counts of trespassing, and one count of heroin consumption – and only three went to trial.
They were the break-ins at the billiards hall - and the theft of the debit card belonging to his older brother, who is named Nurazman Suparman, according to Gawker.

A 16 year old Singaporean tells how he feels about the Education System

Dear The Real Singapore,
“The Competition is very fierce is very fierce in Singapore, if you don’t keep up you will be left to rot and die”
“Your competitors are studying when you are sleeping, study at least 6 hours a day”
“You will only get C5/C6, you won’t be able to go anywhere”
My name is Ariffin, I’ll be sitting for my O Levels this year and this are some of the things that I have been hearing very often from my teachers in the past couple of months.
Sometimes I wonder if I am the only one who is awake. The unfortunate truth is that as  I look around my classroom most people are still fast asleep. I am not being literal here.
This whole Darwinian Dog-Eats-Dog Mentality has clearly been instilled in these youths.. To the extent that when test scores are flashed on the screen, students look at the scores of others instead of their own. And these competition that is clearly evident is anything but friendly, although on the surface it might seem otherwise.
I used to be one of them too, I used to be Top 5 in Express from Secondary 1 – Secondary 3. Then at the end of last year, I was awakened to the truth. I have tried to study hard since then and ignore whatever I had learnt but I guess things don’t work that way. I can’t lie to myself, ignorance is not bliss. This quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes sums up what I felt during that period of time.. Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.
Well you may ask, what exactly do I mean by ‘being awakened to the truth?’ I like the fact that you’re curious and you’re questioning. Allow me to explain.
Many students would simply fend off the question “What if everything you were taught was wrong?” They aren’t even willing to consider the possibility of that suggestion being true. Well. I don’t blame them. Their cognitive dissonance is kicking in. You see, we have been conditioned since young to think and behave in a certain manner. All of us. We have been mentally conditioned to become slaves of the elite. We may not be able to see the chains on our hands, but as far as the elite, the 1% are concerned, we are indeed slaves, simply a number. And what is the best way to create these slaves? The Education System.
I honestly feel disgusted when I look at my Social Studies and History Textbooks. These textbooks are full of lies and blatant Propaganda. From Lee Kuan Yew’s “greatness” to Gorbachev’s “failure”, it’s all lies and it is all aimed to make you think in a certain way. It’s no wonder that Social Studies is a compulsory subject in Secondary School. People have learnt not to trust Wikipedia to a large extent due to the fact that anyone can edit the information there. Well, it’s about time we learn that the Government can control what is in our textbooks too. So why should we trust it 100%? Just because it’s there? I don’t think so.
Not only did I realize the agenda of what is in our textbooks, but I also realize the truth about what is not in them. For example, in my four years of Science in Secondary School (I take 3 Pure Sciences) I have never came across the name of a man that I believe had single-handedly lit up the world. Yes, I am talking about Nikola Tesla. I bet most Secondary School students do not know him but every time we switch on a light in our rooms, we are able to do so due to his Alternating Current. He also founded the Radio, X-Ray, Neon Lamps, just to name a few. And don’t get me started on the brilliance of the Tesla Coil, a device capable of providing free energy to the planet from renewable sources of energy. This device posed a threat to the elite as they couldn’t profit from energy anymore so JP Morgan teamed up with Thomas Edision to stop Tesla. And I’m sure all secondary school students know who Edison was.
I just don’t get it. In this current age where the CEO of Wendy’s and Apple are school drop outs while taxi drivers are holding degrees. Does academic success translate into success in life? I beg to differ. I hate it when I see teachers scold my classmates and ask them questions like “Do you want to go to ITE?” They even say things like “If you fail your O Levels, you will have no future.”
Albert Einstein once said that “Everyone is a genius but if  you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree, you will spend your whole life thinking it is stupid.” I’m afraid that is what our current education system is doing.
How do we change this? No, we don’t need a revolution like Egypt. All we need is to use the greatest tool that lies in between our ears. Start Thinking, Singapore.
The Government is afraid of people who think and question everything. They don’t want people to think too much, as when we start questioning we will be led closer and closer to the truth. And my friends, the truth will piss you off at first but it will set you free. And the best place to start this habit of thinking is from young.
At first, when I was exposed to all these knowledge, I considered it a curse. I didn’t understand why I had to know all this at this age. I tried ignoring it, but ignorance is a great evil. I soon realized that everything happens for a reason and the reason I was awakened is so that I can awaken others too. But all I can do is show you the door, you have to be the one that walks through it.
I am a firm believer in the power of education but our current education system is more interested in indoctrination rather than education. They keep students busy memorizing chunks of information that is false or that most will not use as a distraction from them really analysing what is going on in the world around them. Television, Games, Movies, they all serve this same cause too. They distract, deceive and destroy.
Really, all you have to do is start questioning.
Why is Cannabis illegal although it is has not killed anyone and is proven to cure cancer?
Why did we not give our former President Ong Teng Cheong a state funeral?
Why did our former President Devan Nair live in Self Exile?
Why are Singaporean Kids being sent to tuition from a young age?
Start questioning and you’ll begin to see things in a different light.
For me, I believe the most important thing in life is happiness. Well you may say I don’t understand the real world, I say you don’t understand life. Most of my friends choose their Post Secondary Education not based on what they were passionate about but based on what would give them the best salary. Well maybe they are being practical, but it truly saddens me when I see someone give up their hopes and dreams and conform to society. I don’t think it is worth it. As the recent survey results has shown, Singapore is one of the least if not the least happiest nation in the world, yet we still have Ministers who are paid millions to smile on behalf of us to put on a good image to the rest of the world.
At the end of the day, you might ask me, so what if I know all this? I can’t do shit about it. Well, if you think you’re too small to make a difference, try spending one night with a mosquito.
Do not fear them, do not fear the truth. Fear is a mental illusion, a prison that we have got to break free from. They feed on your fear and your ignorance. Stop fueling them.
All around the world people are waking up, but most of Singapore is still asleep. But fret not, the signs are very positive. With Pages like The Real Singapore, DemonCratic Singapore, Singapore Cannabis Awareness sprouting up, along with recent protests on the White Paper and other issues, the government is starting to sweat. Behind our government’s camera friendly smiles is panic. Remember, whenever they give you something, do not be blinded by the benefits because they have a hidden agena. We need to show them that we are not the Singapore that was once under the iron fist of Dictator Lee, you can’t buy us over with goodies and cheap talk anymore. Fellow Singaporeans, start judging Politicians by their actions and not by their words.
I am doing my own part to wake my fellow Singaporeans up too, I have recently created a Facebook Page called Wake Up, Singapore to reach out to more people and spread the truth.
If Singapore is going to change, I have no doubt that our generation is the one that is going to be the catalysts of that change.
Thank you for reading this, it means a lot to me. I hope that you will start thinking for yourself.
“You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope one day you’ll join us and the world will live as one.” – John Lennon

Ariffin
TRS Junior Writer

A 16 year boy response to another 16 year old who said, "We need to appreciate the PAP."

Dear The Real Singapore,
I’m Ariffin and I’m 16 too. I read your article and I would like to share my views on it.
Now, before anything else I would like to remind all readers of TRS of a quote (above picture).
Yes, Terence. There was a time where not only did I not know what I know today. There was a time where I used to see things the way you do too. I was once in your shoes.
Just two years ago in Secondary 2, I believed that serving NS was a great honour. I also believed that being gay was wrong and I used to mock them. Above all, I also believed that I knew a lot and I had developed a dangerous level of ignorance of the things that surround me.
But down the road, I began transcending my ego and I realized that there are many things that I do not know. I realize that many of my opinions were not my own opinions, but the opinions of my textbooks, my teachers, my religious leaders, the newspapers, television and society as a whole. To say that I began seeing things in a different light would be an understatement. Rather, I began seeing the big picture. It isn’t a pretty one. Once you began to scratch the tip of the iceburg, you’ll understand why many people like to say that ignorance is bliss. But I prefer the truth as although it does hurt, it will set you free.
I am very happy that a fellow 16 year old is starting to think about things that actually matter in life. It’s good to be politically conscious, my friend. Although I do not agree with some of your views, it’s good that you’re concerned about these matters. But I am afraid to say, with your opinions and views; you’re a perfect product of our current education system.
Firstly, I would like to talk about you saying that most of us do not appreciate the PAP. You see Terrence,  we do appreciate the PAP. Some of their leaders have done good things in the past, but even they are not appreciated. Let me ask you this, I know you  have heard many things that Mr Lee Kuan Yew has done right, but tell me how much you know about what Mr Lee has not done right. I’m not focusing on his failures but rather I am asking you to think about how well the textbooks, print and basically all of mainstream media potray him without ever highlighting his failures. Yes, you talk about the PWP which is brought about by the low birth rates in Singapore. Do you know who was the man behind the ‘Stop At Two’ Policy? Also, how many of PAP’s ideas were actually Lee’s? He may be the one executing or announcing it, but it may be the brainchild of Goh Keng Swee or Rajaratanam who aren’t as glorified as Mr Lee is. I challenge you to watch the banned documentary ‘One Nation Under Lee’ on YouTube to open your eyes to the other side of Mr Lee and the PAP.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t appreciate the PAP. I am saying that you should be aware of both sides of the coin before jumping the gun. About being spoon-fed by the government, did you know that the poor of Singapore are not only getting poorer but also growing in number each passing day? Some 105,000 households in Singapore - that's one in 10 family homes, or 387,000 people - earn an average monthly income of $1,323 and some 114,000 individual residents earn less than $805 a month, according to government data. That's despite the country's average per capita income of $52,305 a year, one of the highest in the world. Not to mention the million dollar salaries that our ministers spoon feed themselves with a silver spoon.
Well you talk about appreciating all that PAP had done for us. Do you have the slightest clue what people like Chia Thye Poh, Deva Nair, Ong Teng Cheong, JB Jeyaratanem and Chee Soon Juan have done for us? Chances are that you wouldn’t. Because we never hear of these guys in our textbooks despite the enormous sacrifices they have made for our little red dot.
Secondly, I would like to alert you of a fact. You say that Messiah’s antics are instilling fear into the hearts of Singaporeans.
Let’s see, in the 2011 General Elections 60.1% of the people voted for the PAP. You say that majority of the people do not appreciate the PAP. If what you are saying is true, this means that although most Singaporeans are against the PAP they still continue to vote for the PAP.
Who is the one instilling fear into the hearts of Singaporeans now?
“If Aljunied decides to go that way, well Aljunied has five years to live and repent” – Lee Kuan Yew, 2011
The word repent is something that I expect to see in a Bible. The last place I would expect to see the word repent would be from the mouth of a democratic leader.
While we’re on the subject of the bible, I would like to direct your attention to your views on gay marriage. I am pretty sure Jesus told us to love everbody unconditionally. I do not study the bible  but what if the LGBT community
Was a way for Jesus to test us if we really do love unconditionally?
I love What If questions..
What If I was wrong
What If everything I know was a lie
You see, the key to seeking truth is to question everything we know. Even God. We must never stop being curious and thinking critically. Many people are resistant to change, but many people do not realize that in this age of information, it is ok to change your opinion with new information?
You know, Thaliand has a crazy and wacky side but when I went there on a holiday last year, I was pleasantly surprised at the general attitude of people there. They were warm, friendly and generally stress-free, it was the opposite of what I see In Singapore. Yes, they may not be as educated as we are, but man they sure are happier.
And I do not believe that having a degree means that you’re educated. I believe that there is a huge difference between education and schooling, many can’t tell the difference between the two. Anyway that’s another story, I don’t wanna make this post much longer than it already is. I have written an article on education a month ago, it’s here.http://therealsingapore.com/content/16-year-old-singaporean-sharing-trs-how-he-feels-about-sg-education-system
On a parting note, I would like to say that I this world. There are many things we do not know. It is important to keep an open mind and also to form your own opinions. Your opinions on NS, PAP and Anonymous may have been influenced by Main Stream Media.  I encourage you to do your own research and seek your answers.
We’re both 16 and we haven’t been through NS yet, so it is best we shouldn’t judge. And also, we must never stop educating ourselves and never stop considering the possibility that we might be wrong.
Terrence, I can only show you the door.. but you’ve to be the one that walks through it. As I mentioned in my article, I hope to awaken as many people as possible to the truth. I hope I can do the same for you.
If you truly are 16, our generation will be the future of this nation. I hope to see a future generation of Singaporeans who can not only think critically but who also have hearts of Gold.

Is this the bravest cat in the East?

By Sergei Krasnoschekov and Kate Baklitskaya

Meet Syoma, the fearless, who plays cat and mouse....with a fox.
Get away from me land! Syoma the cat with his most unusual play mate. Picture: Sergei Krasnoschekov
His day job is to keep the mice at bay in houses at an entry post to the magnificent Kronotsky Nature Reserve in the volcanic Kamchatka peninsula, in the extreme east of Russia.
Locals say Syoma does it well.

After the arduous work, it's time to play. In Syoma's case, this is with someone a little bigger than him.

A-a-are you ready to play? The fox is seen approaching the cat.  Pictures: Sergei Krasnoschekov
Syoma is a cat with character, and I learned it from the first few seconds of our acquaintance. My attempt to pat the animal ended with him hissing, scratching and biting.
Of course, he tolerated me after that - it was only for show.
Once, as a kitten, young Syoma was almost stolen and carried away in the claws of some white night bird. The truth is that that time nothing bad happened and the cat came back slightly injured, but safe and sound.
Now, a year older, Syoma has made friends with some of the locals, including this fox who regularly appears to play with the cat.

Easy, easy... at some point it is not clear whether animals are about to start playing - or fighing. Picture: Sergei Krasnoschekov
Syoma seriously tries to defend his territory.
The fox in my opinion, is just teasing the cat, making him play and run.

Yet both seem to be having fun, and this does not appear to be an all-out territorial battle.
There is no question of Syoma being intimidated.
The fox flirts and comes closer to the cat, and Syoma with a serious face tries to drive the fox away.
But then they run round and round the post on the edge of the nature reserve each happily pursuing their own goals.
For the cat it's a good warm-up before going to bed. After such exercises he has a very deep and long sleep.

KPN dedahkan warga Indonesia jual kad pengenalan palsu

Saya masih sabar menunggu penjelasan rasmi Ibu Pejabat RELA Malaysia berhubung status keahlian Arshanikum kerana semalam pihak terbabit sedang menyiasat identitinya melalui alamat sewaktu dia mendaftarkan diri sebagai ahli RELA.

Al-Fatihah buat Norazita, semoga rohnya dicucuri rahmat Allah.

Need a new liver? Just print one!

A group of US scientists have created the world’s smallest human liver which can survive for forty days and works like the real thing – using a 3D printer.
The mini-livers, made by California-based medical research company Organvo, are just half a millimetre deep and four millimetres wide but can perform most of the functions that a real liver can.
The printer builds up 20 layers of hepatocytes cells, which carry out liver functions, along with two major types of liver cell. It also adds cells from the lining of a blood vessel. This allows the liver cells to receive nutrients and oxygen.
The most recent liver created survived for 40 days in the lab, which might not seem very long as human liver cells are replaced every 300 to 500 days, but the company’s previous mini-liver only survived for five days.
Keith Murphy, Organovo’s chief executive officer said: ‘In April we were able to show that liver function was retained in our 3D liver for over five days, and we have now demonstrated that our tissues perform consistently for at least 40 days, a significant improvement over the average 48 hour performance of 2D cultures.’
While research is in the early stages, scientists believe that future versions could be used for transplants. This would a significant step for more than 120,000 people worldwide on organ transplant waiting lists.

Siberian teenager 'sells her virginity for $27,950'

The lot was described as 'virginity', and the condition: 'new - not used'. Picture: The Siberian Times
SIBERIA Nov 11, 2013. The young woman, who is only known by her nickname 'Shatuniha': 'I am in urgent need of money, so I am selling the most precious thing I possess. I am ready to meet up soon, even as soon as tomorrow, and I am ready to have my virginity verified. I can come to a hotel at Predmostnaya Square with a document confirming my virginity, and with a person who will take the cash and leave, so that I am not fooled.

'This person will take away the money, but I will stay... The money should be cash only.'
On the online auction site - 24au.ru - the lot was described as 'virginity', and the condition: 'new - not used'. It was part of an auction called: 'Children grow up.'

The offer appeared on 30 October and by a day later a deal had been done for 900,000 roubles, or $27,950, which was 100,000 roubles, or $3,100 above the starting price.
The buyer's name was given as Evgeniy Volnov, but no details about him were published.
The police in Krasnoyarsk appeared satisfied the deal was genuine and said it broke no laws.

'This situation is neither an administrative nor a criminal violation,' said a spokesman. 'Nor does it fit into a description of the 'Prostitution' clause from the Code of the Administrative Violations'. The police said they had 'no right to give a moral assessment of girl's actions'.

It appeared that the same woman had offered to sell her virginity on another site at the age of 17 in April 2013. At the time, she said: 'I am 17, very soon I am turning 18. I want to urgently sell my virginity. I want to sell it at a very expensive price to someone who can properly appreciate it.

'I have no bad habits, and I am nice looking. I live in Krasnoyarsk but I am ready to travel to any other city'.

24,000 year old boy from Lake Baikal is 'scientific sensation'

Geneticist Connie Mulligan of the University of Florida called the findings 'jaw-dropping'. DNA from this ancient Siberian skeleton offers clues to the first Americans. Picture: The State Hermitage museum, St. Petersburg
New DNA findings, if confirmed, have stunning implications for our understanding of both pre-historic Siberians - and native Americans. They would suggest that, contrary to previous understanding, some indigenous populations are - in fact - European or West Asiatic in origin.
The Danish-US research was carried out on the bones of a Siberian boy whose remains were found near the village of Mal'ta close to Lake Baikal in the 1920s in a grave adorned with flint tools, pendants, a bead necklace and a sprinkling of ochre. The remains are held in the world famous Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg and analysis of a bone in one of his arms represents 'the oldest complete genome of a modern human sequenced to date', according to Science magazine.
'His DNA shows close ties to those of today's Native Americans. Yet he apparently descended not from East Asians, but from people who had lived in Europe or western Asia,' said ancient DNA expert Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen. 'The finding suggests that about a third of the ancestry of today's Native Americans can be traced to 'western Eurasia'.'
The research may help explain why 'European ancestry previously detected in modern Native Americans do not come solely from mixing with European colonists, as most scientists had assumed, but have much deeper roots', said the report.
It may also raise a similar question about the 'European look' of some ancient Siberians - for example in the tattooed permafrost princess Ukok found in a burial chamber in the Altai Mountains, whose remains date from around 2,500 years ago.

Russian scientists reconstructed her to show what many were surprised to be a European face, unrelated to the modern day Altai tribes. The finding is confirmed by DNA analysis which showed her to be Pazyryk in origin. Her group was part of the Samoyedic family, with elements of the Iranian-Caucasian substratum'.
The four year old boy was found near the Belaya River close to the village of Mal'ta which is famed for the discovery of ancient art, some of it showing close links to European discoveries of the same period. Willerslev and co-author Kelly Graf of Texas A&M University 'used a variety of statistical methods to compare the genome with that of living populations.
'They found that a portion of the boy's genome is shared only by today's Native Americans and no other groups, showing a close relationship.
'Yet the child's Y chromosome belongs to a genetic group called Y haplogroup R, and its mitochondrial DNA to a haplogroup U. Today, those haplogroups are found almost exclusively in people living in Europe and regions of Asia west of the Altai Mountains, which are near the borders of Russia, China, and Mongolia.'
Until now it has been widely believed that Native Americans were linked to Eastern Siberian tribes, having crossed Beringia, a vast Ice Age land bridge.
The magazine report stated: 'One expected relationship was missing from the picture - the boy's genome showed no connection to modern East Asians.
'DNA studies of living people strongly suggest that East Asians - perhaps Siberians, Chinese, or Japanese - make up the major part of Native American ancestors. So how could the boy be related to living Native Americans, but not to East Asians?'

Willerslev and his team propose that earlier than 24,000 years ago 'the ancestors of Native Americans and the ancestors of today's East Asians split into distinct groups.
'The Mal'ta child represents a population of Native American ancestors who moved into Siberia, probably from Europe or west Asia. Then, sometime after the Mal'ta boy died, this population mixed with East Asians. The new, admixed population eventually made its way to the Americas.'
The timing is uncertain but 'the deep roots in Europe or west Asia could help explain features of some Paleoamerican skeletons and of Native American DNA today'. Some of the traces of Eurasian genetic signatures in modern Native Americans do not come from colonial times when incoming Europeans mixed with the indigenous population.
'Some of them are ancient,' said Willerslev. Geneticist Connie Mulligan of the University of Florida called the findings 'jaw-dropping'.
Yet perhaps the findings - the full details of which are due to be published soon in Nature journal - are not so surprising. Famed Russian archeologist Mikhail Gerasimov found art work at Mal'ta which show a close resemblance to European female figurines of the Upper Paleolithic period. The similarities extend to tools and dwelling structures.
