School principal leaves $1 million to Indon maid

5:05 PM

A maid from Indonesia who worked in Singapore for a former primary school principal for over 13 years has become a millionaire overnight thanks to being included in her former employer's will.
Madam Khoo Guat Neo, who died aged 92, had left about a third of her estate to her maid which was worth about $1 million.
It is understood that Mdm Khoo was single and had lived alone with her maid for several years in a landed property near Upper Thomson Road.
The maid had returned to Indonesia upon her employer's death but returned last month to collect the money.
There is clearly a mix of attitudes to maids in Singapore.
In some families, maids run away due to being abused and mistreated while in other families they are treated as if they are part of the family and work for many years.
In this case, it is clear that the maid was seen as part of the family and must have worked closely with her employer and formed a close bond.
The incident has been quite well received by Singaporeans with many commenting that it is a good example and that people should learn from it to treat their maids better too.
Many comments online have said that it is heartwarming and a reminder that maids are human too and deserve to be treated with respect.
On the other hand, a small number of people commented that maids may want to capitalize on such cases in future and deliberately look for single, old and rich employers for a chance to "strike it rich".
Do you think maids should be treated as a part of the family?
